He immediately ordered away the Police boat (a gig fitted with 2 Chinese rig sails) and went down to it, taking a Thompson sub-machine gun, a service rifle (30 rounds) and a revolver, and accompanied by two Chinese detectives armed with revolvers, and five unarmed Chinese boatman.

On the way he met a messenger who had just come up from Sha Tau Kek, to ask him to go down at once, as information had been received that the "Cadets" were going to seize the junks.

He immediately gave chase to the junks, which he could see were manned by more than their usual complement of men, and were being rapidly poled Eastwards in the direction of Im Tin.

As soon as the Police boat was seen, the junks put in towards the shore. It should be explained that the land at that point is Chinese Territory, but that British jurisdiction extends over the waters and up to High water

mark.

Sergeant Knowles called out to the junks to stop, but they took no notice in spite of repeated shouts.
